The most expensive interface mistakes are structural rather than visual. Navigation gets organized the way the data is stored, clients then client detail then account then status, which makes sense to whoever built the schema and none at all to the person using it at eight in the morning between phone calls. We map screens to the way people actually work, so the actions someone performs dozens of times a day are the ones that take the fewest clicks.
Density is its own design problem. The SuperSeasonals redesign moved a twelve-link top menu into a sidebar workspace with keyboard symbol search, took the opportunity card from ten metrics to sixteen, and added a reliability rating and a 52-week seasonality path so a trader can triage a 313-row week instead of reading it top to bottom. Adding information and reducing effort at the same time is the actual job on any screen that carries real data.
On a product that will be around for years, the design system is what stops the work drifting. The TradePartner and SmartTrading rebuilds both moved from component-level CSS and Bootstrap to Tailwind with design tokens and a dark-first theme, which is what lets a new screen look like it belongs without anyone re-deciding a color. We hand over the component library alongside the screens, so your developers extend the system instead of working around it.
Usability testing is woven into our process, not bolted on at the end. The result is software that reduces training time, increases adoption, and drives measurable improvements in user satisfaction.
We design the states that are not the happy path, because those are the ones that generate support calls. The empty dashboard for a user who has not finished onboarding, the loading and partial-data states, the error message written for the person reading it rather than the system throwing it. Those get decided in the prototype, alongside the interactions and the edge cases, not improvised during development.
